Oroville, the "City of Gold", is the "Gateway to the Feather River Canyon National Scenic Byway." Nestled next to the Sierra Nevada foothills and neighboring Lake Oroville, the entire area surrounding the city of Oroville offers breathtaking scenery to visitors who choose to participate in any one of its numerous recreational activities: golf, bicycling or horseback riding; house boating, water-skiing, or sailing at the lake; fishing from a boat or along a tree lined river bank; hiking along trails first trod by Native Americans.
For those who prefer a slower paced visit to Oroville, there are many sights to see in the downtown area. Now the center of an area that is home to 60,000 people, Oroville grew from a small gold rush town after John Bidwell discovered gold on the Feather River in 1848. Visitors can tour a 49'er museum, the 1856 C.F. Lott Historic home, an 1863 Chinese temple, or one of many other California Historic Landmarks; stroll through one of the town's many gardens and browse the local antique shops.
