The Meyer Crest Story

What?
Wedding photo of Herb and Fran

In 1948, the founders of Meyer Motels, Ltd. (now known as Meyer Crest, Ltd.), Herbert and Frances (Lengfeld) Meyer, purchased their first motel in Red Bluff, California. Since then, we have grown to over thirty-five motels, owned and operated by the Meyer family, in three Western states. Herb, a transplanted New Yorker, was a highly self-motivated man with strong aspirations. The motel business provided him with outlets for his creative energy and aspirations. Fran, a third-generation Californian born in San Mateo provided support and guidance while also raising their four children, contributing her ideas and maintaining the accounting for the family business. Throughout their younger years, all the children were involved in the family business in varying degrees.

During our years in the motel business, we have seen many types of lodging accommodations at varying prices. Often the price of a room has little relationship to the quality of the product. Although the accommodations and prices may vary from motel to motel, we believe that when our facilities are compared with local competition, a better value will be hard to find. From our smaller, limited service motels to our full service facilities, the Meyer family strives to provide an independent touch to our guest's stay to impart that "home away from home" feeling of comfort.

Who?
The unique character of the Meyer family business Photo of Herb has its foundations in the special qualities of its founders. Herb's interest in the lodging and hospitality business can be traced to his relationship with his grandfather who immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1892, and established a small hofbrau in Middle Village on Long Island. Later "Opa" retired to the Catskills Mountains to operate a little pensione. With his childhood memories to inspire him, Herb's fascination was heightened after he and a college classmate "motored" their way through the Southern Atlantic states. During their travels, they encountered the early blossoming "tourist court" concept which preceded today's "motel" category of lodging. Even then he envisioned the possibilities inherent in developing lodging accommodations convenient for people traveling in automobile. Although he was working in the merchandising sector of retail, Herb never stopped thinking about possibilities for the lodging industry.

Fran, a third generation San Franciscan, descendedPhoto of Fran from families who immigrated from France and Germany during the middle 1800's, eventually settling in San Francisco by the mid-1860's. Several fascinating stories have been recounted about her family's experiences in early San Francisco. One is told of her grandfather's pharmacy on Union Square near Maiden Lane. According to the legend, the bottom floor of his building housed the pharmacy while the above two floors were leased to a restaurant and "lodging" accommodations. A graduate of Stanford, Fran took after the strong-willed, self-reliant, and multi-talented women of her family, working hard to build the business she and Herb began.

After the birth of Herb and Fran's four children, family life revolved around the motel business. At six years old, Dede accompanied her Dad to the motels to help, even renting rooms and operating the old-fashioned PBX at the family's second motel, the California Motel in Redding. As Bert grew older, he landed the jobs no-one else wanted to do, seeking to learn more about the family business from the ground level. Throughout their childhood, all the children worked to clean rooms, maintain the grounds, deliver supplies, assemble the newly built motels, and do whatever the family business needed.

It seemed only natural that some of the children might choose to continue in the tradition envisioned by Herb and Fran. Over the last fifteen years, Dede and Bert have taken over the responsibility for management and operation of Meyer Motels. Dede, as CEO, and Bert, as President, are a uniquely close sister/brother team, fully involved in all aspects of their family business from the design and construction of every new facility and in all aspects of their company's operations. Believing in the adage, "What goes around, comes around," they try to approach their business honestly and fairly, guided by their desire to provide the best possible accommodations for the most reasonable price, in the specific niche of each Meyer Crest, Ltd. property. Their children, too, are surrounded by the family business participating whenever possible, working in the corporate offices and at construction sites. In the tradition of their family business, they are guided by their hopes and aspirations for the third generation.

The staff employed by Meyer Crest helps create a special environment, sometimes even with parents and children working together. Many of our corporate staff "family" have come up through the ranks, as did Bert and Dede, and are dedicated to serving the needs of our guests. Our managers and h/motel staff are encouraged to take pride in their respective properties, to welcome each guest into their "home". We believe that this form of management embodies the essence of the American tradition, providing a warm and congenial atmosphere for our customers.

Why?
Building a family business was a natural for Fran and Herb. Both were creative, independent, and willing to devote their energies to the development of a business that reflected their dreams and provided a future for generations to come. The lodging industry was their vehicle; their slogan represented their philosophy: "Styled for Your Comfort, Priced for Your Purse".

Although Fran passed away in 1996, her spirit remains a wonderful inspiration; her life an embodiment of the Golden Rule. She is still remembered by those guests who knew her as warm and gracious while standing behind the front desk welcoming their arrival. Guided by Fran's memory, the second generation strives to create the same home-away-from-home environment she provided to our guests for many years. The Meyer Motel product is constantly reeavaluated in order to fulfill Fran's dream of providing incomparable, affordable accommodations that are tastefully furnished, clean, and comfortable for the traveling family, tourist, and commercial person alike.
