Carlin
Local Attractions

Carlin area mapCarlin is more than just a mid-way stop between California and Utah or Idaho.

Popular events in Carlin include the annual Business Show in April, the Car & Craft Show in June, and the Light Parade in November. Nearby Elko is the host to the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering held in late January-early February and the annual Mining Expo held in mid-June.

Carlin is very proud to be home to the University of Nevada, Reno Fire Science Academy Crisis and Emergency Management Institute (FSA), a world-class emergency management and response training facility. Famous for its hand-on training, participants of first classes included firefighters from Shell Oil Products and Dow Chemical.

Visit Carlin's Chinese Gardens Nature Study Area, a park with winding trails, picnic areas and restrooms, and the Carlin Canyon's Historical Wayside which offers rare geological features as well as historical information. In the valley area along the Humboldt river and in the nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests, enjoy such beautiful scenic vistas as Humboldt Palisades, the Ruby Mountains (Nevada's wettest range with its 11,249 feet high Ruby Dome), glacially-formed Lamoille Canyon with its streams, rock cliffs, and waterfalls, and the Ruby Mountain National Recreation Trail. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is the largest national forest outside of Alaska covering nearly 4 million acres. Here, sagebrush-dominated rangelands give way to lush alpine meadows and sparkling streams. In addition to hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and dirt-biking, one might tour the nearby ghost towns of Palisades and Alpha. Or, for the most intrepid winter adventurist, try ice-climbing in the Lamoille Canyon.

The oldest town in Elko County, Carlin was settled by Chinese railroad laborers in the 1860's. Known then as the Chinese Gardens, in 1996 the town was renamed after General Carlin of the Union Army. During the early-to-mid 1900's, Carlin was a primary railroad icing station. Locals would cut ice blocks from nearby ponds, store them and reload the refrigeration cars as they passed through town.

Today Carlin's largest employer is the mining industry with two of the world's largest gold mines providing employment to thousands of miners and mine technicians. The Carlin Trend is an astonishingly rich vein yielding annually millions of ounces of microscopic gold. The Carlin Gold Mining Company (now Newmont Mining Corporation) began operations in Carlin in 1965. Operating 9 open pit mines, 4 underground mines, and 17 processing facilities in the state, Newmont produced its 50 millionth ounce of gold in 2001. Just in Nevada, Newmont employs approximately 2,800 people and owns, leases, or controls nearly 2 million acres. Barrick Gold Corporation's Betze-Post Mine is a conventional open pit operation and, at the end of 2001, reported mineral reserves of 16.4 million ounces. Since its inception, Betze-Post has produced over 16 million ounces of gold.
